SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT

Human dwellings create waste. The way it is handled, stored, collected and disposed, can pose risks to the environment and to the public health. The uncollected waste in Northern Iraq is often mixed with human and animal excreta, and dumped in the streets and in drains, contributing to flooding, breeding of insect and rodent vectors and the spread of diseases. The collected waste is many times disposed of in uncontrolled dumpsites and/or burnt, polluting water resources and air. Due to increased urban population, the municipalities fall often short in community services.

Qandil has had discussions with local government and donors of the necessity to develop a proper solid waste management system that is feasible and sustainable, looking into the financial management and planning structures, human resources, waste management, technical expertise, appropriate solid waste technology and public awareness.

IREP program in Said Sadiq and Arbat districts

In collaboration with the municipalities Qandil provided garbage collection teams working in the communities, cleaning the streets and cities of the sub-districts of Said Sadiq and Arbat in Sulemaniyah Governorate. The population of Said Sadiq is around 48,000 and Arbat approx. 21,000. Tools and equipment were purchased and handed over to the municipalities. In addition, garbage containers and manholes were constructed. The project was funded by UNDP.
